Acuren is seeking a Materials Lab Technician to support our Engineering Department. In this role, the successful candidate will plan and perform a variety of material and field tests, following established technical procedures or developing new approaches to achieve project objectives.

 

  • This position will be based out of our Richmond, BC office.
  • Salary range for this role is CA$30.00/Hr. to CA$35.00/Hr. depending on certifications and experience

Responsibilities

Laboratory Work:

  • Assist with engineering failure analysis, forensic investigations, and improvement of client samples.

  • Prepare, test, and analyze laboratory samples according to defined procedures, including mechanical and metallurgical testing per ASTM or other applicable standards.

  • Participate in laboratory assessment techniques, including:

    • Photography, machining, polishing

    • Optical microscopy, fractography, SEM/EDX analysis

    • Hardness testing, image analysis, metallography, chemical analysis

  • Perform basic equipment maintenance as directed.

  • Operate and calibrate analytical equipment under guidance.

  • Prepare and report results as directed.

Field Work:

  • Travel to client sites while following Acuren safety procedures.

  • Conduct on-site testing, including:

    • Positive Material Identification (PMI)

    • Portable hardness testing

    • In-situ metallography

    • Portable spark testing

    • Ferrite testing

Laboratory Support:

  • Ensure all instruments, tools, equipment, and computers are maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition.

  • Keep the laboratory and testing areas safe, clean, and organized.

  • Maintain equipment records, including datasheets and maintenance history.

  • Follow laboratory work orders and instructions, providing results in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Technical diploma in Materials, Metallurgy, Chemical or Mechanical technologist, or related diploma.

  • Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience in laboratory environments, welding, mechanical repair, maintenance, failure analysis, pressure equipment assessment and inspection, fitness-for-service evaluation, or repair design is an asset.

  • Working knowledge of materials standards, industrial codes, and regulations related to materials, welding, tanks, and pressure equipment is considered an advantage.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt to various audiences and produce clear, professional reports.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and compliance with provincial Occupational Health and Safety regulations, ISO systems, and Acuren’s Safety and Quality Management policies and procedures.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.
